Summer Camp at Playground Stage

Playground Stage Summer Camp is the young performer's chance to experience all aspects of putting on a show! Every student has a chance to set design, costume design, and act in a musical with help from professional Teaching Artists! Each day includes theatre related crafts, acting, singing, and dancing lessons, as well as many behind the scenes activities. On the last day of camp the students will perform a play for friends and family in an outdoor performance complete with set, costumes, and props. Frequently Asked Questions

Check out the Sample Camp Schedule along with these frequently asked questions.

Please reach us at Education@playgroundstage.org if you cannot find an answer to your question.

  • Bagged Lunch - All campers need to bring a bagged lunch that does not need to be refrigerated or warmed in a microwave. We will be very active so please make sure your child brings enough food to keep them full & energized.
  • Snack - Campers will have a snack break each day around 2:30- they should bring a snack in addition to their lunch.
  • Comfortable clothes - We do not require any special clothes, just make sure your child can move freely and comfortably...we will be dancing! We will be spending our time both outdoors and indoors- your child may want to bring layers if they get cold in the AC. Finally, as part of technical theatre curriculum we will be working with art supplies including paint so please keep that in mind.
  • Closed-Toe Shoes - In theatre, actors are required to wear closed-toe shoes to avoid injury and to ensure their shoes stay on while performing. We expect this from our young actors at camp too.
  • Water Bottle with a Spill Proof Lid - There are no water fountains at ACCC, send your child with a refillable water bottle. They may refill from the tap in the kitchen or bathroom.
  • Medicines or First-Aid - This includes any medicines your camper needs during camp time (sunscreen, Epi-pens, or other emergency first aid your child carries with them regularly). Please bring these to a staff member on the first day of camp.
  • Script - On the first day of camp students will receive their script - they need to bring this to camp each day.

Performances are the last day of each session at 11:00am & 1:30pm

  • Depending on enrollment, campers may be split into two Musicals based on grade level. You will receive information via email closer to the start of camp about what group your child is in and what time their performance is.
  • Our performance will be held outside in the upper playground/park at Avery's Creek Community Center
  • Please bring chairs, blankets, and anything you need to sit for the duration of the performance.
  • In the event of rain we will adjust performance times or move the performance indoors.
  • The performance is free and open to the friends and families of campers.

Playground Stage participated in the Buncombe County Free School Meals program in the Summer of 2024. If this is offered again in 2025 PGS will be participating. Be prepared to pack your child a lunch and a snack each day that does not need to be refrigerated or heated if you do not wish to participate or if the program is not available in 2025. More information will be available in the spring of 2025.

Our camps are designed for elementary and intermediate school aged children whether it is their first or twentieth on-stage experience.

Camp is a mixture of outdoor and indoor activities. Typically morning rehearsals are outside in the shaded structure performance space. Lunch and Recess time is spent outside depending on weather. In the heat of the afternoon rehearsals and backstage arts activities are typically inside or occasionally outside under a shaded structure.

Each Camp Session rehearses and performs a full length children's musical. Each session is a different musical so that our Playground Stage Campers can attend multiple sessions if they like! Summer Staff choose from professionally licensed children's musicals after they have a sense of the age breakdown of each camp session. Some past favorite musicals have been Rats!, Snooze the Musical, Treasure Island, Thwacked, and No Strings Attached. Campers find out what musical they are performing on the first day of camp!
